ITINERARY

Day by Day

Day 1:

Independent arrival in Split, which is easily reached by air from most European hubs, or by ferry from Ancona (Italy). Meet your guide at 3 p.m. at the hotel Peristil (or similar) and then board the 4:00 catamaran to Bol, on the island of Brač. Check into your hotel and then head out to explore this charming waterfront town on foot. If timing permits, we can also pick up our scooters this evening so we’re ready to go tomorrow morning. Meet again at 7 for drinks and then dinner at 8. Overnight Bol at the Hotel Kaštil (or similar). Dinner and hotel included.

Day 2: Explore Brac

Pick up your scooters and head off to explore Brač, the largest island in the Adriatic. We ride up and over the limestone bulk of the island before stopping for a coffee break at the marina town of Puciša, famous for its limestone works (the island has been famous for its limestone since the times of the ancient Greeks, and the Romans used it to build Diocletian’s palace in Split). We ride up to Skrip to visit the small archaeological museum, then head down for lunch at a traditional Croatian konoba (trattoria). Afterwards, ride over to Sutivan for a swim and a short break and then to the medieval port of Milna, once the Roman naval base of Emperor Diocletian. We ride back through dramatic landscapes to Bol, stopping for a breathtaking vista from Vidova Gora, the highest point in the Adriatic. Overnight Bol.  Breakfast, dinner and hotel included.

Day 3: Transfer to Hvar Island

Hop on a small day-ferry this morning for Hvar Island (Jelsa or Hvar town, depending on departure). Rent scooters and set off to visit this island, which features annually among “The world’s most beautiful islands” lists. We first explore the “wine route” inland, with hilltop villages set amidst the verdant green of lush vineyards and olive groves. After a stop for lunch at another local “konoba” we make our way to Hvar town via the lavender-covered hills (they bloom in June, but they’re still lovely the rest of the year!). Enjoy a cocktail in the elegant waterfront area of Hvar town, and then meet up again for dinner. Overnight Hvar at the Villa Nora (or similar) Breakfast, dinner and hotel included.

Day 4: Explore Hvar Island, pt. II

Take some time this morning to visit Hvar town, then depart via the high Brusje road for Starigrad, the historic old port of Hvar Island. We wander the town’s narrow limestone alleyways and then visit the 15th century castle belonging to the island’s most famous poet/son, Petar Hektorović. Then we ride over to Vrboska for a visit of the island’s only remaining traditional net maker. Your guide may also surprise you with a visit to his friend’s winery for snacks, a tasting and possibly lunch. After lunch return via the south coast and stop in Milna for a swim before returning to Hvar town. Overnight Hvar.  Breakfast, dinner and hotel included.

Day 5: Transfer to Vis Island

We take an early catamaran this morning back to Split and then catch a ferry to the farthest of the Dalmatian Islands, lovely Vis. We check into our hotel and then pick up our scooters for a relaxing afternoon ride. Ride along north coast to Rukavać, where you can stop for coffee and a swim, and then head over to Komiža, which many locals say is their favorite town in the whole island chain. We ride back to Vis town for dinner in one of the town’s great restaurants. We stay at the Hotel Tammaris (or similar) along the waterfront. Overnight Vis. Breakfast, dinner and hotel included.

Day 6: Morning ride and then ferry back to Split

Our last day of scooting takes you into the interior of the island to explore the series of caves and bunkers that the Yugoslav army built during WWII and into the Cold War. You can even see the air-strip that helped save many lives during wartime. Another lunch and winery visit will tide you over until your ferry back to Split at 3 p.m., arriving at 6 p.m. The trip ends back in Split so you are free to make your own plans after that. You might want to extend your trip to include beautiful Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage site just 4 hours south of Split. Let us know and we’ll set something up for you! Breakfast, lunch and ferry included.

Please note: According to the departure date of your tour some details of the itinerary may change. This is because we make discoveries whenever we run a tour. Sometimes they are good, like a wonderful new wine bar that we want to take you to, and sometimes bad, like a road has been washed away. We, therefore, sometimes change our itinerary to improve it by adding something new or substituting something that is no longer up to our standards.  We always aim to provide you with the best possible experience because we want you to come back for another tour! We will let you know before departure of any changes to the original itinerary.

Our tours have been featured in the travel section of The Guardian (UK), Jan 20th, 2007. Another article was published by The Observer on April 23rd, 2006. Our Tuscany trip was also featured in a 3-page full-color article in the London Telegraph, and in London’s The Times.

Traveling by scooter is fun and easy. We have a local scooter provider who supplies us with modern 50cc scooters (125cc scooters are sometimes available but you need a motorcycle license in Croatia). They are not “Vespa” brand but are very similar, with an electric start and automatic transmission. The brakes are on the handlebars, like a bicycle. We provide you with helmets. It’s the best way to get off the beaten track without working up a sweat!

NOTE: A motorcycle license is NOT required to drive a scooter a 50 cc scooter in Croatia. A valid car license is required.

We will be riding about 100 kms a day, at least, therefore you need to be a good rider. We aim to break up the rides so that we do not ride more than 45 minutes in one stretch.

Previous experience driving a scooter or motorbike is essential. You must arrive at the start of the trip already a competent rider, otherwise the risk of injury and hospitalization is too great. If you have not ridden a scooter before then you should take lessons or rent a scooter locally and learn how to ride it before coming on the trip.

Physical activity is limited to walking in the towns and villages.

To drive a scooter, you must be over 18 years of age & have a valid driver’s license. Previous experience driving a scooter or motorbike is essential. Please note: We will not teach you how to drive a scooter. You must arrive at the start of the trip already a competent rider.

You will be driving a motor vehicle on public roads. You are responsible for your safety but also for the safety of other motorists, bikers and pedestrians. You must be able to control the scooter and drive it competently. If we feel your driving skills put you and others at risk, we reserve the right to take the scooter away from you. In the event that you cannot ride as a passenger on the back of someone else’s scooter then we will help to arrange an alternative mode of transport such as a taxi or a rental car, but at your expense.

By making a booking, you declare to have a driving licence valid for the duration of the journey and for the vehicle used on this tour.
