We pick you up from enchanting Florence. A one-hour van transfer takes you into the countryside to meet your guide and your Vespa™ scooter. You will soon be cruising along Chianti’s quiet roads, gliding past vineyards and villas. No need to worry about where to go and what to see because your guide will lead the way! They know the most scenic roads, the loveliest places, and the best food and wine in Tuscany. We stay at Borgo Fontebussi, a lovingly restored Tuscan Manor house that is now a four-star hotel featuring sweeping views over the romantic Tuscan landscape. Touring by scooter is a wonderful way of exploring Tuscany. You can stop when and wherever you want and parking is never a problem. Combine the freedom and exhilaration of touring by scooter with the amazing food, wine, and beauty of Tuscany. PLUS, you can extend your holiday by two nights with our optional extension.

NOTE: You must arrive at the start of the tour already a safe, competent rider. We are not a motorbike school. A motorcycle license is NOT required to drive a scooter up to 125cc in Italy. A valid car license is required.

You can fly directly into Florence or into Pisa, just an hour away by bus or train. For more information see our “Getting There” page and “Flight Info.” We pick you up at 2:30 p.m. and have a one-hour transfer to Gaiole in Chianti. After a safety talk, we’ll let you try out your Vespa™ scooter on a quiet stretch of flat, straight road. Once you feel comfortable we begin our ride, past the hilltop hamlets of Rietine, Castagnoli, and San Martino in Vento. Wonderful views over the heart of Chianti take in a string of medieval castles which were the front line in the battles between Florence and Siena. Appropriately, we stop at the Castello di Brolio to visit the grounds of this impressive and historic castle. Brolio has been the home of the noble Ricasoli family since 1141 and is now home to the famous Baron Ricasoli winery. We end our ride at Borgo Fontebussi where (weather permitting) we will dine al fresco on their lovely panoramic terrace . Pick-up from Florence, hotel and dinner included.

Day 2 – Saturday or Wednesday: This morning we cross the Arno river and ride toward the imposing Pratomagno mountains. We stop for a cappuccino along the way, and then continue on to “Il Borro,” a small village which was bought in its entirety by the Florentine fashion house of Ferragamo and completely restored. We then hop back on our Vespas and ride a few miles to agriturismo Paterna. Claudia welcomes us to her family farm and shows us the winery and gardens, then we sit down to a hearty Tuscan lunch using their local produce. The afternoon ride takes us through a string of quaint villages and to a fantastic gelateria that has been rated the fifth best in Italy (out of 80,000!). Return to Fontebussi through rolling countryside with gorgeous views or convince your guide to take you to the Prada outlet store. You will have time to relax back at the hotel and enjoy a swim before meeting up for an informal wine tasting before dinner in the nearby hamlet of Montegonzi. Hotel, breakfast and dinner included.

Day 3 – Sunday or Thursday: Today we visit Siena, one of Italy’s most enchanting cities. Conquered by the Medici in 1585, Siena became a backwater, frozen in time, making it one of Europe’s finest examples of a preserved Gothic city. The high concentration of buildings from the 12th-14th centuries makes Siena unique, and the main square, “Il Campo,” is considered by many to be Italy’s most beautiful piazza. The famous bareback “Palio” horse race is held in the square twice a year. Our local guide will explain the mayhem and passion of the race, then take us to visit the Duomo and its medieval treasures. You have free time to explore the exquisite historic center, of course, you might get side-tracked by the shops and cafés along the Banchi di Sopra, Siena’s main pedestrian shopping street. We have lunch in town and then meet up in the Piazza del Campo for our return ride via Monteaperti and Castelnuovo Berardenga to the green embrace of Chianti and our oasis at Borgo Fontebussi. Hotel, breakfast and dinner included.

Day 4 – Monday or Friday: This morning we ride to the picturesque hilltop town of Radda in Chianti. In 1203 Radda came under the control of the growing Florentine Republic but was sacked by the Sienese in 1478. It was rebuilt, and 50 years later successfully fought off the last Sienese siege. Today Radda has the best cappuccino and pastries in Chianti as well as some lovely antique shops and boutiques. We leave Radda and ride amongst the olive groves and vineyards of Castello di Ama and pass through the tiny stone village of Lecchi in Chianti. Our destination is Rampini Ceramics, arguably the best producer of hand-painted ceramics in Italy where you will learn how majolica ceramics are made, a process that remains essentially unchanged since the Renaissance age. Of course they have a fabulous shop and they ship worldwide. Afterwards we have a short ride to Gaiole, where we say goodbye to our Vespas. We have one last fabulous lunch in the village piazza at Trattoria Sfizio where the Bianchi family makes simple but tasty Tuscan dishes including excellent truffle ravioli or tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms. After lunch we transfer by van to the Montevarchi train station to catch the 15:15 train to Florence (arr. 15:51) or the 15:46 to Rome (arr. 18:46). If you need to leave the trip earlier, we can arrange a transfer for you (at your expense). Breakfast included.

** 2-Day Extension** – We offer a 2-day extension into southern Tuscany. This means two more nights, with the trip finishing back in Montevarchi on Wednesday or Sunday afternoon. For more information, read on!

*Day 4 – Extended Itinerary – Monday or Friday: Those who opt for the longer itinerary will ride south after lunch, leaving the green wooded hills of Chianti for the wide-open spaces of the Crete Senesi. We ride into a completely different terrain from the first part of the trip. Those who have seen the films “Stealing Beauty” or “The English Patient” will recognize this starkly beautiful landscape of barren rolling hills topped by stone farmhouses and solitary cypress trees. Our route takes us through Asciano, a centuries’ old walled town whose inhabitants have ingeniously incorporated the old defensive walls into their homes. Asciano boasts a fine gelateria too, so we won’t miss the opportunity to stop and explore town while enjoying a delicious gelato. Another 45 minutes of riding brings us to San Giovanni d’Asso and the Locanda del Castello, a beautiful small hotel located within the walls of the village’s 16th century castle. Enjoy the beautiful views all around you from this striking hilltop village, perched high above the surrounding landscape. Tonight’s dinner is on the terrace of the hotel’s restaurant. Hotel, breakfast and dinner included.

*Day 5 – Extended Itinerary – Tuesday or Saturday: Today we have a gorgeous ride to the perfect Renaissance town of Pienza. We take small roads that wind their way up, over, around, and between tiny villages surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. We will stop just outside of Petroio to visit a factory that produces giant terracotta urns. It is a fascinating process, really! Then we head to Pienza for our mid-morning cappuccino break. Pienza was designed and built by a local boy who made it big: Pope Pius II. Pius issued a Papal Bull decreeing that his home town was to become a center of art and humanistic scholarship. The town was constructed between 1459 and 1462 in full Renaissance splendor. After visiting the town we ride down into the Orcia Valley for wonderful views back onto Pienza’s Renaissance skyline. We ride up to the walled village of San Quirico d’Orcia for a late lunch, then we have a leisurely ride back to our lovely hotel. Take in the views while enjoying a glass of wine before dinner. Hotel, breakfast, and dinner included.

*Day 6 – Extended Itinerary – Wednesday or Sunday: Today offers one last chance to enjoy Tuscany’s beautiful scenery. This morning we head back towards Chianti, passing the castle of Trequanda on our way. We have a late lunch beneath the shady limbs of huge plane trees at Osteria del Ponte in Gaiole. Your bags will be transferred by van, then we have a van transfer to the Montevarchi train station for the 3 p.m. trains to Florence and Rome. The Florence train is direct, whereas you have to change in Arezzo to get to Rome. Travel time to Florence is 40 minutes, and to Rome is two hours and thirty minutes. Breakfast and transfer to the train station included.

The Hotels – We stay three nights at at the four-star Hotel Borgo Fontebussi, an 18th century manor house that has been restored and turned into a beautiful four-star hotel. After a day on your scooter, take a refreshing dip in their gorgeous 25-meter pool. The optional extension includes a two-night stay in the delightful village of San Giovanni d’Asso at the Locanda del Castello, a small family-run “boutique” hotel located within the 16th century castle that dominates the village. From here we explore the completely different landscape of southern Tuscany and the Val d’Orcia.

The Scooters – We provide bright red 125 cc Vespa™ scooters. They are lightweight, comfortable, and easy to ride, with an electric start and automatic transmission. The brakes are on the handlebars, like on a bicycle. We provide helmets and a wind/rain jacket and rain trousers if required. The 125 cc Vespa™ scooter is powerful enough for two people to happily cruise through the Tuscan countryside. Couples can ride together on one scooter (and save €100 for one person!).

IMPORTANT | QUALIFICATIONS

You must be over 18 years of age, have a valid driver’s license, and all non-E.U. citizens must also have an INTERNATIONAL driver’s license to drive a scooter (they are easy to get in your home country! Please click here for more information). Of course, anyone can be a passenger. Previous experience on a scooter or motorbike is advantageous and highly advised. If you have not ridden one before then you should do so before you do this trip. Rent a scooter locally, and learn how to ride it before coming on the trip. U.K. residents can try Vroom by the Sea, a scooter rental in Brighton

WE ARE NOT HERE TO TEACH YOU HOW TO DRIVE A SCOOTER. YOU MUST ARRIVE AT THE START OF THE TRIP ALREADY A COMPETENT RIDER. We have been amazed by people who arrive expecting to drive a scooter on public roads who have never ridden a scooter before and who are clearly uncoordinated, un-athletic, and who will clearly never be able to drive a scooter safely. Please do not be one of these people. Our Vespa™ scooters are easy to ride, but a good sense of balance and coordination is required. They have a 125cc engine and an all-steel frame. They are lighter and easier to drive than a larger motorbike but they are also heavier than a moped and other smaller 50cc scooters (the Vespa™ scooter weighs 110 kg, or about 235 lbs).

You will be driving a motor vehicle on public roads. You are responsible for your safety but also for the safety of other motorists, bikers and pedestrians. You must be able to control the scooter and drive it competently. If we feel your driving skills put you and others at risk we reserve the right to take the scooter away from you. If you crash one of the scooters — defined as losing control of the scooter and driving off the road — we will not let you ride anymore. In the event that you cannot ride as a passenger on one of the scooters, then we will help to arrange an alternative mode of transport, either taxi, or rental car, but at your expense.

Finally, age may be a factor. We have found that most people who are over 55 and who have never ridden a scooter or motorbike have problems riding them. If you have not used the “motorbike” part of your brain before the age of 55, then it may be too late to learn. We don’t know why this is, but such are the mysteries of Life. So if in doubt, please take the time to try a scooter at home. Afterwards, if you are happy with your abilities and you feel safe then you are ready to ride one of our scooters.

The bottom line is that we just want everyone to have a safe and happy holiday!

Alberobello is famous for its conically shaped trullo houses, which are unique to the region and impart a fairytale feeling to the landscape. Our last two days are in the fantastic city of Matera, also a UNESCO World Heritage site. Matera is cut in two by a spectacular ravine, creating cliffs that have been inhabited since prehistoric times. During the last thousand years the locals excavated their houses, chapels, and shops from the soft tufa rock. The result is fascinating and unique honeycomb of troglodyte buildings.

And of course it wouldn’t be Italy without great food and wine. Puglia is home to some of Italy’s most interesting cuisine, from fresh seafood to the opulent array of antipasti prepared from local produce: such as roasted artichokes, fresh figs and almonds, savory vegetable pies, and the deliciously creamy burrata cheese. What’s more, the hot southern sun and little-known indigenous grapes are being transformed by state of the art wine-making techniques into opulent and powerful, many now considered to be among some of the best in Italy.

NOTE: You must arrive at the start of the tour already a safe, competent rider. We are not a motorbike school. A motorcycle license is NOT required to drive a scooter up to 125cc in Italy. A valid car license is required.

Day 1 – Saturday: Independent arrival in Bari and check into the Hotel Boston. Formerly the domain of smugglers and brigands, Bari’s quaint and atmospheric historic center has been revitalized during the past ten years. Cafés, wine bars, and trattorias line the labyrinthine medieval streets, all of which eventually lead to the remarkable Romanesque architecture of the 12th-century Basilica di San Nicola. Depending on your arrival time, the afternoon and evening are open for sightseeing or just relaxing after your journey. Dine independently tonight in one of the many local restaurants. All meals and transfer to Bari on your own.
Hotel included. Dinner not included.

Day 2 – Sunday: Meet your guide this morning at 9:00 in the hotel lobby and then transfer by van to the countryside just outside of Monopoli where our scooters will be waiting. After a safety talk you will have time to get used to the scooter in a parking lot before heading out onto a very quiet road for more practice. When you feel comfortable on the scooter – and once we have assessed your ability to safely drive the scooter – we will head out to explore the beautiful countryside of Puglia. Our ride takes us through ancient olive groves and past whitewashed cottages to the charming village of Locorotondo for lunch. Afterwards a short ride takes us to neighboring Martina Franca. Here you have free time to search out some gelato and admire the Baroque architecture of this quaint town. Then we have a short ride to Alberobello where we check into the Hotel Rampendula, located amongst the town’s trulli houses. Your bags will have already been delivered by van. After checking in you have some free time before reconvening for an aperitivo and then dinner at the Michelin-starred “Il Poeta Contadino.” This world famous restaurant was once named the best restaurant in Italy by Gault et Millau, and has received the Wine Spectator’s “Grand Award” for it wine cellar. Overnight Alberobello.
Hotel, breakfast and dinner included.

Day 3 – Monday: Today begins with a gently sloping downhill ride to Monopoli. We stop along the way to admire the view over a sea of olive trees that seem to wash up against the Adriatic. We take an ingenious side road to avoid traffic and ride right up to Monopoli’s imposing 16th century fortifications. We explore Monopoli by foot, but only after a mid-morning cappuccino! We hop back on our scooters to drop in on our friend Ettore, who welcomes us into his masseria (fortified farm), which has been in his family for centuries. Ettore will show us around his lovingly maintained property and take us on a visit of his olive mill. The mill’s huge, 19th-century olive presses stand as silent testament to the former function of this once important estate. We will then have lunch in the cobbled courtyard. Let your belt out a notch as Zia Victoria spoils us with wonderful home cooking. Our afternoon ride follows the coast road for about 12 kilometers before climbing back up to Alberobello. On our way we pass many whitewashed “masseria,” imposing fortified manor houses that are the legacy of centuries of danger when corsairs raided the Pugliese coast. Free time this afternoon to wander through Alberobello’s maze of trulli houses and cobbled streets and shop or simply enjoy a chilled glass of wine in the piazza. Speaking of wine, we will have an introductory wine tasting of the excellent regional wines of Puglia followed by dinner in a local trattoria. Overnight Alberobello. Hotel, breakfast, lunch and dinner included.
Then we have another hour’s ride to stunning Matera, where you will have free time in the afternoon to explore the ancient village and/or the new town’s shops. Matera is another UNESCO World Heritage site and is truly an unforgettable place. Up until the late 1950’s, many of Matera’s inhabitants lived in stone dwellings partially excavated from the rock face of the two steep ravines that slice through the city. The “Sassi” fell into ruin in the 1960’s when the city moved these “cave dwellers” into new government housing. Fortunately for us, however, the people from Matera began restoring the ancient village a decade ago and it is now a truly unique sight. Our hotel for the next two nights, the Hotel Basiliani, is a chic and modern re-interpretation on Matera’s traditional “Sassi” houses. Indeed, the hotel has lovingly restored a complex of buildings to provide its guests with a unique experience. We’ll enjoy an aperitivo on the hotel terrace and watch the last rays of the sun play on the opposite wall of the gorge before walking to dinner. Hotel, breakfast and dinner included.

Day 5 -Wednesday:This morning we have a guided visit of Matera, giving us a fascinating glimpse into the ancient peasant and Christian/pagan culture of the area. We can visit centuries’ old frescoed rock chapels and monasteries, as well as some of the previously inhabited cave-houses. We then set out for a ride that takes into the heart of the province of Basilicata, one of Italy’s most beautiful and least populated regions. Our route takes as across wide open plains to perched hilltop villages. You will get a glimpse of authentic Italy as we explore the rustic villages of Montescaglioso and Miglionico before returning to Matera. A fantastic dinner awaits us at the end of the day. Hotel, breakfast and dinner included.

Day 6 – Thursday: We have a final morning of scooting as we return to the coast and the Monopoli train station to catch the 11:53 a.m. train to Bari, connecting to Rome (arriving at 17:20). Breakfast and transfer to train station included.

The Hotels:
The Hotel Boston in Bari is a convenient three star business style hotel with a great location in the heart of the city. It is close to the train station, the main shopping street, and the old port. We are there for one night. The Hotel Rampendula, is a comfortable hotel with swimming pool located amongst Alberobello’s historic trulli zone. The Hotel Basiliani in Matera is a unique hotel situated amongst the historic “Sassi” district with memorable rooms and unforgettable views.

IMPORTANT | QUALIFICATIONS
You must be over 18 years of age, have a valid driver’s license and an INTERNATIONAL driver’s license to drive a scooter. Of course anyone can be a passenger.

In the past we have been amazed by people who arrive to drive a scooter on public roads who have never ridden a scooter before and who are uncoordinated, un-athletic, and who will clearly never be able to drive a scooter safely. Please do not be one of these people. Our scooters are easy to ride, but a good sense of balance and coordination is required. The scooters have a 125cc engine and an all-steel frame. They are lighter and easier to drive than a larger motorbike but they are also heavier than a moped and other smaller 50cc scooters (they weigh about 110 kg, or about 235 lbs).

You will be driving a motor vehicle on public roads. You are responsible for your safety but also for the safety of other motorists, bikers and pedestrians. You must be able to control the scooter and drive it competently. If we feel your driving skills put you and others at risk we reserve the right to take the scooter away from you. In the event that you cannot ride as a passenger on the back of someone else, then we will help to arrange an alternative mode of transport, either taxi, or rental car, but at your expense.

Finally, age may be a factor. We have found that most people who are over 50 and who have never ridden a scooter or motorbike have problems riding the scooter. If you have not used the “motorbike” part of your brain before the age of 50, then it may be too late to learn. We don’t know why this is, but such are the mysteries of Life, Zen, and the Art of Scooter maintenance. So if in doubt, please take the time to try a scooter at home. Find a big vacant parking lot, put on a helmet, read our accompanying document about motorcycle safety, and give it a whirl. If you are happy with your abilities and you feel safe, then you are ready to ride one of our scooters.

The bottom line is that we just want everyone to have a safe and happy holiday!

The Scooters – Traveling by scooter is fun and easy. We have a local scooter provider, who supplies us with modern 125cc scooters. They are not Vespa™ brand but are very similar, with an electric start and automatic transmission. The brakes are on the handlebars, like a bicycle. We provide you with helmets. The 125cc scooter is also powerful enough for two people to happily cruise through the Pugliese countryside. It’s the best way to get off the beaten track without working up a sweat! Of course, couples can ride together on one scooter (and save €100 for one person).

Centuries of mining for the richly-colored earth have left a surreal landscape of eroded cliffs and bizarre peaks in a rainbow of red, yellow, mustard, and cream. We enjoy a picnic lunch in this fabulous area before continuing on Apt, our home for the next two nights. We receive a special welcome in Apt from Laurent and Marie, owners of Le Couvent, a charming boutique hotel. While we have an apéritif by the pool, they will tell us about the history of the medieval convent that they have lovingly transformed into their home. Indeed, they live here with their 3 children, but don’t worry, there is more than enough room for everyone! A short walk to dinner brings us to Thym te Voilà, whose owner and chef finds inspiration in old Provencal recipes. Overnight in Apt. Hotel, breakfast and dinner included.

Dated as one of the ten oldest villages in France, Saignon has a rich Roman history visible in the cobbled streets and old stone portals. Our route takes us through cherry orchards, olive groves, and scrub forest to link up some of the most beautiful villages in all of France, including Bonnieux, Lacoste, Ménerbes, and Oppède-le-Vieux. We’ll eat lunch at a café in a village square or at a scenic spot overlooking the tiled rooftops. Upon our return to Apt we can relax by the pool or people-watch at the café next to the town fountain, or have a game of boules in the garden. This evening is a fitting culinary finale to our trip at the “Manade.” Overnight in Apt. Overnight in Apt. Hotel, breakfast and dinner included.

We arrive in Orange in the early afternoon to connect with high-speed TGV trains to Paris, Lyon or Nice. Breakfast included.

IMPORTANT!! : QUALIFICATIONS

You must be over 18 years of age, have a valid driver’s license and an INTERNATIONAL driver’s license to drive a scooter. Of course anyone can be a passenger.

In the past we have been amazed by people who arrive to drive a scooter on public roads who have never ridden before and who are uncoordinated, un-athletic, and who will clearly never be able to drive a scooter safely.

We have found that most people who are over 50 and who have never ridden a scooter or motorbike have problems riding a scooter.

Explore some of Croatia’s most beautiful islands by scooter. Follow our guides along quiet country roads with dramatic views. We explore the islands of Brac and Hvar (frequently rated as one of the “Ten most beautiful islands in the world). After the ride, relax in charming, historic villages and enjoy the local cuisine and world-famous wines. Traveling by scooter allows us to discover the hidden landscapes of these gorgeous islands. Our hotels are specially chosen to be comfortable and reflect the beauty of their surroundings.

The Scooters – Traveling by scooter is fun and easy. We have a local scooter provider, who supplies us with modern 50 or 125cc scooters. They are not “Vespa” brand but are very similar, with an electric start and automatic transmission. The brakes are on the handlebars, like a bicycle. We provide you with helmets. The scooters are powerful enough for two people to happily cruise through the Croatian countryside (*you need a motorcycle license for the 125cc in Croatia). It’s the best way to get off the beaten track without working up a sweat! Of course, couples can ride together on one scooter (and save €100 for one person).

NOTE: You must arrive at the start of the tour already a safe, competent rider. We are not a motorbike school. A motorcycle license is NOT required to drive a scooter a 50cc scooter in Croatia. A valid car license is required as well as an international drivers license. This is very easy to get! Please click here for more information.

Day 1 – Saturday: Independent arrival in Split, which is easily reached by air from most European hubs, or by ferry from Ancona (Italy). Check into our hotel, located in the historic city center (specific hotel depends on departure). Meet your guide at 7 p.m. tonight for a drink followed by dinner. Overnight Split. Dinner and hotel included.

Day 2 – Sunday: Meet your guide at 9:30 a.m. in the lobby of the hotel and transfer by taxi or foot to the harbor for the 11:00 ferry to Supetar on the island of Brac. We pick up our scooters there and have an orientation and safety talk. Once we feel comfortable on our scooters, we ride along the west coast of the island and stop for lunch at one of the villages along the way. We then cut across the top of the island and make our way to Bol and settle into our hotel. Relax or have a swim at the famous “Golden Horn” beach, shaped by the sea into a changing tear-drop shape. We dine tonight at a local restaurant. Overnight in Bol. Breakfast, dinner and hotel included.

Day 3 – Monday: Enjoy a full day’s riding today as we explore the north and east side of the island. We visit the fascinating archaeological museum in Skrip, with remains from Neolithic, Classical, and modern times. We also have a visit of a local winery and can tour the limestone quarries that made the island famous as far back as Roman times. Enjoy an afternoon swim or just relax by the waterfront before dinner. Breakfast, dinner and hotel included.

Day 4 – Tuesday: Today we transfer to the island of Hvar and see why the island is always on everyone’s “Most Beautiful Islands” list! We begin in the charming village of Jelsa and then ride through beautiful small roads through the “wine country” where Hvar produces some of its best wines. After lunch at a local kanoba (café), we ride over a spectacular ridge to elegant Hvar town, where we have time to explore the backstreets and port-side cafes before meeting up again for dinner. Breakfast, dinner and hotel included.

Day 5 – Wednesday: This morning we head out to explore the southern coast of the island, pausing for a short walk to the deserted village of Malo Grabjle, lunch by the sea, and maybe a swim before heading back to Hvar town. We dine together at one of the city’s many seafood restaurants. Breakfast, dinner and hotel included.

Day 6 – Thursday: An 11:00 ferry takes us back to Split and the end of the trip. We arrive around 1 p.m., so you have time to make further travel plans the same day. Or, you might want to extend your trip to include beautiful Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage site just 3 hours south of Split. Let us know and we’ll set something up for you! Breakfast and ferry included.

Hit the open road on your own scooter on this culinary tour of Tuscany’s Chianti wine region. Each day features an in depth (and delicious!) look at Tuscan food and wine traditions, with winery visits, tastings, and cooking lessons. Traveling by scooter is fun and easy. Our new scooters have an electric start and automatic transmission. Your local guide will lead you along quiet back roads amongst olive groves and vineyards to storybook castles and hilltop villages. This is a great holiday which combines the freedom and exhilaration of touring by scooter with the delicious food, wine, and romantic landscapes of Tuscany.

Touring by scooter is a wonderful way of exploring all that Tuscany has to offer. You become a part of the environment rather than being sealed off from it. You can stop when and wherever you want, and parking is never a problem. Come and feel the thrill of cruising down the open road, under the Tuscan sun!

NOTE: You must arrive at the start of the tour already a safe, competent rider. We are not a motorbike school.

(Luggage is transferred by van. 4 nights Gaiole in Chianti or Borgo Fontebussi. Trip ends at Montevarchi train station.)

Day 1 – The tour picks up from the Hotel Orto de’ Medici, our recommended hotel in Florence.

Day 2 This morning we cross the Arno river and ride toward the imposing Pratomagno mountains. We stop for a cappuccino along the way, and then continue on to “Il Borro,” a small village which was bought in its entirety by the Florentine fashion house of Ferragamo and completely restored. We will have a tour and tasting at the Ferragamo winery before hopping back on our Vespas to ride a few miles to agriturismo Paterna. Claudia welcomes us to her family farm and shows us the winery, (and interesting comparison with what you will have just seen at Il Borro) and gardens, then we sit down to a Tuscan lunch using their local produce. Hotel, breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Day 3 - Today we ride to Siena, one of Italy’s most beautiful and historic cities. We have a guided visit to help us understand the furor and passion that surrounds the famous bareback Palio horse race, which is run around the city’s 12th century Piazza del Campo twice a year. Then you have free time to have lunch and explore the town’s exquisite historic center and admire its Gothic architecture. Of course, you might get side-tracked by the shops and cafés along the Banchi di Sopra, Siena’s main pedestrian shopping street. Our return ride passes through the exquisite countryside near Monteaperti and Castelnuovo Berardenga. Upon our return to the hotel time to freshen up before a short transfer by van to a nearby restaurant where we learn how to make fresh pasta and gnocchi with local chef Francesco. After preparing dinner, sit down and enjoy the fruits of your labor. And you can enjoy the wine because you are returned to the hotel by van. Hotel, breakfast and dinner included.

Day 4 : This morning we ride to the picturesque hilltop town of Radda in Chianti. Afterwards we have a short ride to a very special lunch with our friend Massimiliano Biagi. “Massi” is the farm manager at the famous Barone Ricasoli vineyards. He is responsible for the 2,500 acre estate of the Castello di Brolio, of which 500 acres is planted in vines which regularly make wines of exceptional quality, scoring consistent 90 plus points from Wine Spectator. Massi’s other passion is cooking. He loves to share his passion and he will invite us into his garden for a special “picnic” that he has prepared. After lunch we can visit the cellars and enjoy a tasting, although you will have to spit! Afterwards return to the comforts at Fontebussi. Hotel, breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Day 5 : One last beautiful ride on our scooters via the walled village of San Gusmé to Gaiole in Chianti where we must say goodbye to our Vespas. We have lunch at Bianchi’s, a local, family-run trattoria in the piazza, and then transfer to the Montevarchi train station for 3 p.m. trains to Florence and Rome. Breakfast included and transfer to Montevarchi train station.

** 2-Day Extension** – We offer a 2-day extension into southern Tuscany. This means two more nights, with the trip finishing back in Montevarchi on Wednesday or Sunday afternoon. For more information, read on!

*Day 5 – Extended Itinerary : Those who opt for the longer itinerary will ride south after lunch, leaving the green wooded hills of Chianti for the wide-open spaces of the Crete Senesi.

Day 6 – Extended Itinerary : Today we have a gorgeous ride to the perfect Renaissance town of Pienza.

*Day 7 – Extended Itinerary : Today offers one last chance to enjoy Tuscany’s beautiful scenery.

Note: Everyone who drives one of our scooters needs to have an international car drivers license (unless you have a European Union drivers license ). This is very easy to get! Please click here for more information.

The Hotels: If you wish to stay in Florence the night before the trip starts we recommend the charming Orto de’ Medici, a superior 3-star hotel located on the former gardens of the powerful Medici family. Our hotel in the Chianti countryside is the Borgo Fontebussi, an 18th century manor house that has been beautifully restored and turned into a four-star boutique hotel. A new 25-meter swimming pool has been added to the grounds to create a wonderfully relaxing environment and the perfect base for us to explore Tuscany by scooter.

The Scooters – You will be riding a bright red 125 cc Vespa™ scooter. They are lightweight, comfortable, and easy to ride, with an electric start and automatic transmission. The brakes are on the handlebars, like on a bicycle. We provide you with helmets. The 125 cc Vespa™ scooter is powerful enough for two people to happily cruise through the Tuscan countryside. Top speed is 80 kph but we will be touring at a slower, more comfortable and safe speed. Indeed, we usually do not exceed 50 kph (30 mph). Of course, couples can ride together on one scooter (and save €100 for one person!). We also have two smaller 100cc Sym “Mio” scooters. Depending on availability, you will receive either the 125cc Vespa™ scooter or the 100cc Mio.

IMPORTANT!! : QUALIFICATIONS

You must be over 18 years of age, have a valid driver’s license and an INTERNATIONAL driver’s license to drive a scooter. Of course anyone can be a passenger. Previous experience on a scooter or motorbike is advantageous and highly advised. If you have not ridden one before then you should do so before you do this trip. Rent a scooter locally, and learn how to ride it before coming on the trip. U.K. residents can try Vroom by the Sea, a scooter rental in Brighton.

WE ARE NOT HERE TO TEACH YOU HOW TO DRIVE A SCOOTER. YOU MUST ARRIVE AT THE START OF THE TRIP ALREADY A COMPETENT RIDER. Over the years we have been amazed to find people who arrive to drive on public roads but have never ridden a scooter before and are clearly uncoordinated, un-athletic, and will clearly never be able to drive a scooter safely. Please do not be one of these people. Our scooters are easy to ride, but a good sense of balance and coordination is required. The Vespa™ scooters have a 125cc engine and an all-steel frame. They are lighter and easier to drive than a larger motorbike but they are also heavier than a moped and other smaller 50cc scooters (they weigh 110 kg, or about 235 lbs).

You will be driving a motor vehicle on public roads. You are responsible for your safety but also for the safety of other motorists, bikers and pedestrians. You must be able to control the scooter and drive it competently. If we feel your driving skills put you and others at risk we reserve the right to take the Vespa away from you.

We have found that most people who are over 50 and who have never ridden a scooter or motorbike have problems driving them.

It’s about having fun.

Forget the beautiful views, the great food, and the nice hotels, if you don’t have a laugh and a giggle during the tour, you won’t come back, and we want you to come back! It really is all about having fun, and enjoying the company of your travel companions and guides. There are only a few things that we can do to make this happen, the most important of which is to have wonderful people guide your tour.

Marco looks after a Vespa rider

When I hire a guide, I hire them first and foremost for the quality of their company. They have got to be enjoyable to be with. They have to be the best travel companions, ever. The rest they can learn!

Which leads me to the second thing that we can do to ensure that you have a great time, and that is of course to provide a great tour at all levels. The hotels, restaurants, transfers, special events, all have to work seemlessly. You need to feel that you are getting value for money, and a great experience, and once you realize that we have looked after everything, and that your guides are both professionally skilled and wonderful company, then you can relax and have FUN!
