Trip at a Glance - 2010 GIRO d’ITALIA – A High-Altitude, Dolomites Extravaganza!

As we know, the Giro d’Italia always comes down to the final grueling week of climbing in the Dolomites.  Next year is no different, and we've got a tour that tackles some of the most epic climbs in Italy (don’t worry, plenty of van support provided!).  Here is a first, off-the-cuff dream itinerary. Details and firm plans to follow!

Day 1 – Sat May 22 –  Meet and greet in Conegliano Veneto at 2 pm (it’s less than 1 hr from Venice, less than 2 hr from Verona).  Shuttle to Ampezzo, warm up ride.
Overnight Ampezzo.

Day 2 – Sun May 23 –
Ride up the Zoncolan after flat-ish ride, then see the Giro go for the most spectacular uphill finish of the whole race... this is most likely the hardest Alpine climb, the one that even some pros tackle with a triple chainring. 10 kms with an average gradient of 10%. This is where Simoni dropped everybody while in the pink jersey on his way to win his second Giro in 2003!
Overnight Ampezzo.

Day 3- Mon May 24 – Say goodbye to Ampezzo, we head towards Dobbiaco via Sesto, amongst the spectacular peaks of the Dolomiti di Sesto. Fast downhill to Dobbiaco then bike lane all the way down to Brunico, a spectacular village in one of the most incredible alpine valleys (2 nights there).
Overnight Brunico.

Day 4 – Tue May 25 –
If you think the Zoncolan was hard, the organizers of the Giro have prepared an even trickier uphill Time Trial from San Vigilio di Marebbe (15 kms from our hotel) up to the infamous Plan de Corones. The same time trial was featured in 2007 as well, and it ends with a 5-km stretch of gravel, so it will be very important for the racers to pick the right equipment: too light a bike and you can flat, too heavy and you’ll slow down on the 12% stretches. And of course, on the gravel, you can’t stand or your rear wheel will slide...
Overnight Brunico.

Day 5 – Wed May 26 – Go rub elbows with the riders this morning at the departure from Brunico, then shuttle to Ponte di Legno and we hop on our bikes for a climb up to His Majesty Passo di Gavia. Theater of one of the most epic stages ever in 1988 when American Andy Hampsten took the pink jersey amidst snow and polar temperatures, the Passo Gavia is one of the longest and most respected climbs of Italy. The good news is, after the summit we have a good 20 kms downhill to Bormio (extra loop to the top of the Foscagno pass for the most adventurous).
Overnight Bormio.

Day 6 – Thu May 27 – Ride from Bormio up the Stelvio, the highest road in Italy, where Fausto Coppi rode on his way to several Giro victories in the 1950s (the road was still unpaved and it was relatively easy to see wolves and bears up there!). The whole climb will take a good 2 hrs, but there will be more climbing and riding on the other side if you want to!
Overnight Bormio.

Day 7 – Fri May 28 – Today the Giro leaves from Bormio, so we will go see the departure then head the other way (downhill who-hoo!) for a much shorter ride, just to intercept the racers again in Aprica for the end of their stage.
Overnight Bormio.

Day 8 – Sat May 29 – Shuttle to Sondrio for departure (easy connection, 2 hr regional train to Milan).
